You need eight hours sleep. This a known fact that we’ve been told since we were little kids.
In fact, it’s probably still echoing in your head, as you remember your Mother saying it as a kid! However, do we still need eight or can we function sufficiently on less?
What about six? What about the over achieving Silicon Valley tech billionaire’s who get up at 5am after a mere 4 hours sleep?
Regardless of the time, there is clearly a need for our body to sleep. We sleep when we are tired, but why is it important to sleep?
Hemp Point go into detail on why it’s much more than just recharging when we are zzzzz.
What is sleep?
Following the world wars, the depressions and the work hard play hard lifestyle Mad Men made so popular; unsurprising, most people thought of sleep as a passive, dormant part of our daily lives. There was a lot of celebrating to do, a lot of life to live and an economy to repair so the idea of ‘’having a good night’s sleep’’ seemed unimportant.
However, half a decade or more later we now know that to not be the case, in fact we know that our minds are stimulated during those precious hours of sleep. Leading on from this, it’s also the impact a good or bad night’s sleep can then have on the rest of our day!
So, what is sleep?
The definition that we found best describes it is from the Sleep Association:
‘’Nerve-signaling chemicals called neurotransmitters control whether we are asleep or awake by acting on different groups of nerve cells, or neurons, in the brain.
Neurons in the brainstem, which connects the brain with the spinal cord, produce neurotransmitters such as serotonin and norepinephrine that keep some parts of the brain active while we are awake. Other neurons at the base of the brain begin signaling when we fall asleep. These neurons appear to “switch off” the signals that keep us awake.
Research also suggests that a chemical called adenosine builds up in our blood while we are awake and causes drowsiness. This chemical gradually breaks down while we sleep.’’
In summary, you are very much active in your sleep and the ways our bodies are designed and engineered is to facilitate both being asleep and being awake.
Is having a good nights sleep important?
There are dozens of reasons that sleep is important and, no, it’s not to help your caffeine addiction. Hemp Point has done some research into CBD and Sleep and how the best CBD oil UK brand, Hemp Point, learned all about the importance of sleep.
Hemp Point worked with a few different resources, like Health line to establish the two key areas of why having a good sleep is important: Weight and Health.
Weight
Short sleep duration is associated with an increased risk of weight gain and obesity in both children and adults. Poor sleep affects hormones that regulate appetite. Those who get adequate sleep tend to eat fewer calories than those who don’t. Good sleep can maximize problem-solving skills and enhance memory. Poor sleep has been shown to impair brain function.
Health
Longer sleep has been shown to improve many aspects of athletic and physical performance. Sleeping less than 7–8 hours per night is linked to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. Sleep deprivation can cause prediabetes in healthy adults in as little as 6 days. Many studies shPoor sleeping patterns are strongly linked to depression, particularly for those with a sleeping disorder.ow a strong link between short
sleep duration and type 2 diabetes. Getting at least 8 hours of sleep can improve your immune function and help fight the common cold. Sleep affects your body’s inflammatory responses. Poor sleep is linked to inflammatory bowel diseases and can increase your risk of disease recurrence. Sleep deprivation may reduce your social skills and ability to recognize people’s emotional expressions.

Ways to Improve your Sleep
Our previous Hemp Point blog talked about the benefits of CBD with sleep. You can check it out here: https://hemppointcbd.co.uk/blog/cbd-for-sleep/
CBD and especially Hemp Point CBD, CBD Oils and the other best CBD in the UK products they sell can help sleep by:
- A higher dose of sleep the better the sleep to not taking CBD
- CBD improved REM sleep in a study which is the imaginative and text book ‘’dream’’ sleep.
- This in itself improved sleep 6x compared to before taking CBD.
- The value for people suffering from Parkinson’s or Alzheimers demonstrates the value for all when it comes to wanting to improve your quality of sleep.
However, there are lots of other things you can do too:
CBD and especially Hemp Point CBD, CBD Oils and the other best CBD in the UK products they sell can help sleep by:
- Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. For children, have a set bedtime and a bedtime routine. Don’t use the child’s bedroom for timeouts or punishment.
- Try to keep the same sleep schedule on weeknights and weekends. Limit the difference to no more than about an hour. Staying up late and sleeping in late on weekends can disrupt your body clock’s sleep–wake rhythm.
- Use the hour before bed for quiet time. Avoid strenuous exercise and bright artificial light, such as from a TV or computer screen. The light may signal the brain that it’s time to be awake.
- Avoid heavy and/or large meals within a couple hours of bedtime. (Having a light snack is okay.) Also, avoid alcoholic drinks before bed.
- Avoid nicotine (for example, cigarettes) and caffeine (including caffeinated soda, coffee, tea, and chocolate). Nicotine and caffeine are stimulants, and both substances can interfere with sleep. The effects of caffeine can last as long as 8 hours. So, a cup of coffee in the late afternoon can make it hard for you to fall asleep at night.
- Spend time outside every day (when possible) and be physically active.
- Keep your bedroom quiet, cool, and dark (a dim night light is fine, if needed).
- Take a hot bath or use relaxation techniques before bed.
